The Appeal of the Night Stalker: The Railroading of Richard Ramirez

The book is out! You can buy the ebook in the following links:

UK
France
Spain
Germany
Italy
Netherlands
Australia
USA
Canada
India
Mexico
Brazil

It should be on all of Amazon worldwide.

And the paperback is here (although they might still be unavailable in some countries – check back in a few days. They can take a while to show up!)

UK
France
Germany
Netherlands
Spain
USA
Canada

We are so excited! But of course, the day couldn’t pass without problems. Yesterday was supposed to be launch night. The ebook went on very quickly without a hitch. Then the paperback was rejected despite identical contents… why? Amazon claimed that the book was already out there in the public domain and in an unspecified foreign language. They demanded I send proof of my right to translate the book to English, and provide details of the original writer, including their death details. WHAT?! I wasn’t told about this problem for six hours after the rejection either, so I had no idea what went wrong.

Anyway, I responded with a load of “IT’S MINE! I HAVE PROOF!!” evidence, and had to wait another six hours for resolution. We didn’t want to announce it until they were both for sale and it totally ruined launch night. I’m terrified it will happen again so hurry and buy the book!

Jay, I was able to put in cart, checkout, order and get a delivery date but ended up getting this message:
        “Hello,
We are having trouble authorizing your payment for the item below. Please verify or update your payment method. Payment declined.”
I called my bank and they did not see any transaction whatsoever like it never went through. Im going to try and order it from the German Amazon later.

I read on Reddit, people saying “thEy aRe tRyiNG tO rE-wRitE HiStoRy”. If any of them are familiar with “The Innocence Files” or “The Innocence Project” then yeah that’s sort of the objective. To look into infamous cases, raise questions and look at it from different angles. It doesn’t mean that everyone in the world will be, can or should be persuaded to think differently. It just allows a platform for the rest of us to expound this case from a different point of view and have a discussion. We are entitled to our opinion as much as they are. The difference is I am not hellbent on just one side. I actually sway from believing he is guilty and not guilty interchangeably. I am not a raging hardcore believer of his innocence. I need more details to make a definitive standpoint.

  15. LMAO while I was searching for the paperback version of the book, the Reddit thread came up as the third search result. All I can say is that some of the comments are embarrassing. If you’re going to criticize someone and outright call them liars, at least have some knowledge of what you’re talking about. When I discuss this case with others, I generally refrain from debating guilt or innocence because I don’t want to impose my beliefs or opinions on them. However, I can say with 100% certainty that he was not given a proper legal defense, and the evidence used to convict him was weak. No matter who they are, everyone deserves competent attorneys who are experienced enough to provide a proper defense. It is their constitutional right! Slam dunk case my butt!

      1. Isn’t that often the case? It seems like they rely on volume and aggression to compensate for the lack of substance in their arguments. It’s a lot easier to shout down others than to engage in thoughtful, meaningful calm discussion. Plain childish if you ask me.

      2. It was always going to be like this, but it comes from a place of ignorance.
I will never understand why some people just cannot look at court documents and have an intelligent discussion about it. Whether they have the same opinion or not, they should be able to behave like balanced, rational human beings.

      3. Anyone can get on the internet and spew accusations and insults, acting all intelligent and confident. But if these people were confronted in person about the things they say behind a screen, it would be as if they swallowed glue or something—they’d be speechless. Initially, I felt like confronting them, but they’re not worth it. It’s not worth the harassment. I’m just glad I have you wonderful people to discuss it with! 😊

  23. Hi..As I was reading in the book I asked myself whether Richard was ever cross examined during the trial and where are the rest of the TV recordings ? And …what about the role of drug abuse ? There are still quite a lot of questions. ..For example about the Image he got by Philip Carlos book..And …what was Richards personaltiy like when he moved to L.A. …In my opinion he must have had mental problems already at that time…And when captured he had lost 9 of his teeth apart from the other ruined ones. I mean ..what did he ? This alone is so crazy …! It s hair rising ..Even when I see heavily addicted or homeless people in the streets over here .I keep thinking about his drug abuse and ruining himself so relentlessly and selfdestructive.

But you never know, maybe one day it will resurface; it does exist, George Woods, one of the psychiatrists, viewed a few hours of it. Richard definitely had mental problems by the time he went to LA, he’d been suffering for quite a few years.

  35. Today I finally got my paperback. Saturday I had apparently missed the delivery person and they brought it to the next post office, where I could pick it up only today. (Yes, in Germany is really everything closed on Sundays!) But of course I couldn’t wait until today and so I have already bought the ebook too. I just finished reading about the orange Toyota in Orange County. The start was not so easy for me. Not being used to reading books on my phone it felt a bit like driving stop-and-go. But that had nothing to do with the book. I agree that it is very well written, easy to read and I didn’t have any problems to understand your English. And of course I like that slight sarcasm shining through between the lines. (You’re so mean! I love it! 😉 ) l also have some questions already. The problem is that I don’t have time to discuss them. I have a book to read! 🙂

  37. It’s 6.45 am here. And no, I haven’t slept yet. I can’t stop reading. Fortunately I don’t need to work this week. I’ve always been a night owl, but usually that means to stay awake until 3 am, not 7 am. On the other hand it’s not the first sleepless night that I have because of Richard. I can remember research nights with like 30 tabs with LA Times articles open or searching birth, marriage, death or arrest records for certain names. Haha, if they would have asked me to search for someone called Rick or so, who got arrested for car theft in December 1984, I probably would have found him. 😉

This case does cause sleepless nights, it’s true.

      1. Of course I did search for Avia patents too. But I wasn’t as successful as you were. I knew there were other Avia models with similar sole patterns, which came out before 1985, but I didn’t know how many models it were and I knew about the different heels, but nothing about the damn dam touching the lines or circles or whatever it was. Really good job! 👍

  38. I truly believe someone knew Richard all to well during his stealings and just saw him as an easy target. Cuz to catch a so called “skilled” criminal would take time and along time Richard was way to easy to arrest for someone who was accused of being the night stalker whom was skilled etc.. it’s just doesn’t make Sense

  39. I’m curious about something, every killer that has been caught have admitted to their crimes at some point after their arrest! Wouldn’t Richard have done that too at some point after his arest if he did any of those crimes? he kept insisting he didn’t in watkiss interview, there would have been no need to appeal for him then if he did, cuz if Richard did do anything what’s the point of denying anything cuz he’s now caught and there’s no point in denying anything cuz he wouldn’t be able to be free again. So it makes me wander maybe there was multiple killers and Richard knew at least a few cuz maybe they also knew solano and maybe solano told them about Richard or something then that satanic thing and swearing Satan. Cuz I mean why would he constantly deny being the killer when he got arrested?!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Exactly, all this! Some people claim his lawyers just forced him to keep denying it but he never slipped up. Women who write to killers say others were happy to talk about their crimes but Richard was the one who always told them he didn’t want to talk about his convictions.

      Liked by 2 people

      1. Cuz as Richard loved true crime I’d expect him to love talking to his writers about it, but he politely declined. Even during interviews he kept saying he can’t talk about this or that while other killers during interviews have gladly shared their view point.

I think RR revelled in the attention in the beginning and wanted to be associated with those crimes, but as time went on and he lived his years in prison (and maybe sobered up a little) he wanted to appeal because he began to reevaluate his life. I was surprised to hear him say he “meditates” in his cell in that interview. Like he sort of slipped up that he’s not this satanic worshipper he kept telling everyone he was. I think maybe he knew himself he would lose his mind if he didn’t meditate. But meditating doesn’t rhyme with satanic worship.

      3. I’m glad he did something to keep himself sane… It’s good he was doing mindfulness stuff. I guess when you’re neglected and suddenly you have adulation, he did was he needed to, to please the women writing to him. And of course he got commissary money and “hot photos” in return.

        Liked by 3 people

      4. I agree with you, he adopted the “notoriety” for a while. I saw him mentioning chakras in a letter, so he was looking into spirituality, and not Satanism. I think that was all part of his media image, in some regard. Although he obviously dabbled in his own version of Satanism during his life, he called it a “stabilising force”.
I think he needed to practice mindfulness, and it was interesting to hear him say he meditated. I believe he did yoga too, or so I read.

  40. I think he was just hiding his true self with the person people created for him by the world! He didn’t want ppl to see his weakness he wanted to live up to this bad boy reputation they have him or something, didn’t his father always tell him and his siblings to never show their true self?!

    1. And playing up to the terrifying killer role was probably also an act to protect yourself in prison.

      Liked by 5 people

      1. Exactly! I think deep down he was honestly really scared but showing that part of him would mean people would call him weak! Maybe also because he thought if he played that role it would make him cool, he talked a lot about the minds of serial killers as if he wanted us to know he very knowledgeable about them even tho he’s said things that anyone would basically know about a killer so nothing really “oh wow” I think he really did care about him self even tho he said he didn’t why else would you meditate?!

      1. Yes! I remember her say that! I guess from that he truly never knew how to show or express his true self he wa always thought to hide his emotions I guess to not look weak! And cuz of his awful sad childhood he just didn’t want to get hurt again so he showed the world this “killer” that they wanted so badly to see without ppl truly understanding him! It’s so sad poor RR

    1. Synn was for sure one of the pen pals he really liked. She was a Satanist, they had a lot in common. A lot to talk about, knowing the other would understand. But nevertheless they were writing for about a year only. She was one of them who came and left… There are more letters to her, also one or two in which you could feel that the relationship was ending (like him asking why she didn’t write him or why her letter was so short etc) Idk if anything happened between them or if it just faded.

I write to a friend who’s incarcerated, he’s not on death row (thank God) but he’s not getting out any time soon. He’s not famous, though. and I keep our correspondence private, which is something Richard’s penpals didn’t do. I wrote to him knowing it was something I would commit to, as long as we struck up a good friendship, which we did. He’s from the same culture and background as Richard, similar upbringing, too. Put it this way, he helped me understand things a lot more.

Cuz one phone call recording of a guy named Rick stating that he owns a night club or something but later found out he and his wife were just faking it or something?

    Like

    1. Or if you think of Jason Moss (the author of “The Last Victim”), who faked to be a Satanist and when he didn’t write for a while he told Richard he had been in jail for beating up his (imaginary) girlfriend.

I think there were some pen pals who were real with Richard, but it still can’t be a balanced relationship. Richard was a celebrity, people knew a lot about him, but he didn’t know anything about them. Today we would call it a parasocial relationship probably. On the other hand, people contacted him, he didn’t need to contact anyone first, so he always knew already that they were kind of interested in him. Then again, the others all had a life outside, could come and go as they wanted. Richard couldn’t go anywhere, just sit in his cell and “wait” what would come to him. It just couldn’t be a normal relationship.
