A Web of Informants: Part 4. The Mugshot

As mentioned in Part 1, two sets of Ramirez’s ‘friends’ independently reported him to police for his burglaries that occurred close to dates of Night Stalker attacks. SFPD’s Frank Falzon was led to Ramirez’s friend Armando Rodriguez who told him Ramirez’s name. Police argued over whether to release Richard Ramirez’s 1984 mugshot, with Falzon insisting they should, as the media will blame police if another person was murdered over the weekend. On 30th August 1985, in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, press conferences were held, and his face was released. Ramirez was visiting Arizona, so had no idea he had been named as the prime suspect.

As soon as Ramirez’s friend Manuel “Cuba” Hechavarria saw his face on the news, he went to a phone box in Garvey and (under the false name of Dave) and told police he knew ‘Ricky’ or ‘Despinada’ (dishevelled or uncombed in Spanish). Felipe Solano also saw the mugshot on the news. Because the Night Stalker had been connected to an orange Toyota, and Ramirez had one at some point, Solano panicked and left his house for the night. He must have gone to the pool hall – this is where Sandra Hotchkiss tried to sell him jewellery for the police. He evidently returned to his house by the next day; the events of this were covered in Part Three.

Cuba’s Police Statement

Hechavarria revealed that he had met Ramirez at the food market, through a woman named Maria Felix. He and Felix were both Tijuana Taxis (like Jesse Perez). Hechavarria and Ramirez began committing purse thefts in Glendale and Pasadena, and Hechavarria would act as getaway driver, taking half the money.

They graduated to car burglaries along the Orange County stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, although Hechavarria said Ramirez did most of it (anything to make himself seem innocent). He said they were joined in these escapades by a man named ‘Julio.’ Hechavarria named someone else with whom they committed crimes: Eva Castillo, and he took police to her former home.

Hechavarria claimed he had stopped his criminal activity, but still possessed some stolen jewellery that he had won off him during a bet, while playing a game of ‘craps’ (a dice game).

How did Cuba Describe Ramirez?

Of all the Los Angeles informants, Hechavarria was the only one who mentioned Ramirez’s psychotic behaviour, such as praying to and communicating with Satan via Ouija board, throwing a bible from a moving truck, while yelling ‘there must be something wrong’ and drawing pentagrams on himself. Nevertherless, he liked Ramirez enough to remain in contact with him after ‘going straight’ and becoming a security guard. Hechavarria’s police statement can be found in the Petition supporting file Document 7-5.

Hechavarria was never arrested for possession of stolen jewellery, his involvement with burglaries and car break-ins, nor was he called as a witness in court because the prosecution claimed they were unaware of his location. When the defence asked them for his contact details (as well as those of Alejandro Espinoza), the district attorney’s office said they should already have his address from the original police reports and refused to cooperate. This is highly suspicious: Cuba (and others) traded with Felipe Solano, and should have been a key prosecution withness. Incidentally, Armando Rodriguez was also ‘missing.’

Some people wonder: if Ramirez had nothing to do with the Night Stalker attacks, how were unconnected friends convinced it was him? If it was not for the police telling people the Night Stalker had curly hair and dental problems, they would have continued to trade with him, receive jewellery and perhaps even commit crimes with him. If they had known the truth about what victims had really described, none of this would have happened.

How police closed in: it was very simple

  1. I personally don’t believe any of his criminal friend thought of him or where convinced he was the night stalker, I think they knew as well as probably Richard did who the true killers were but since there was a big reward why not blame it on the poor defenceless man. But then again someone then like solano as Sandra said was beaten by the cops to blame Richard and go along with their story so idk! There are so many possibilities but which one is true is hard to say.

    1. It’s interesting to speculate over the possibilities. Like 1. Did Richard do one or some of them but took the fall for all? 2. Were the criminals frightened of someone else and it was easier to blame Richard because he was insane? 3. Did the reward money tempt them into lying or blaming? 4. Was Alejandro Espinoza the real killer and he went missing cos he went into hiding? 5. Was a friend killing people and deliberately leaving satanic clues at the crime scenes cos if it all goes to shit, they can just blame Richard? My own personal theory: When Richard was arrested in 1984, he named Julio Romero as the true thief of his car. So what if Julio left pentagrams at crime scenes as revenge?

      1. This!!! All of these theories is very possible! That the thing we are left with more questions than answers! I too thought the same as u revenge can do it for sure!

  2. especially for this case there are way too many possibilities to consider but how on are we even gonna finger it out with all those lies spreading around.

    1. Then again, I think some crimes were nothing to do with the Solano set of burglars. Like Yu and Okazaki. And the Patty Higgins attack.

      1. I believe there was another big group of thief’s maybe and allis with solano?

      2. Yep, that is also a possibility!

      3. Now linking them together will be tricky tho. How did they even think Richard owned load of gun where on earth is this guy even gonna get them?! And throwing them off the bridge is quit ridiculous

  3. but also what I’m wondering as well is that did any victims claim there we more than one person attacking them cuz I’ve only read that they were attacked by 1 and for the deceased one there seems to be only blood or Semin form one guy so if there we a another where would he have been if Richard was involved I don’t think he’d be inside the house judging by the way his peeps describing him a a nervous reck walking in and out of the house being messy won’t his theft I truly believe he would have been a get away driver but without the knowledge of what his criminal friends were doing inside! And him getting told to wait in the car while they steal some shit but then again some victims had nothing stolen from them. Why pentagrams on two crimes but the rest nothing?

    1. With the crimes where there were no survivors, it’s quite possible there were two. Maybe the beating deaths had a different killer to the rape crimes.

      1. But for the no survivors how come they only then found one unknown Semin or blood but not the other suspect if it was a possibility of 2 people?

      2. It’s not two people committing the same crime, more like two people each committing different crimes, which is what Salerno initially thought as well.

      3. Ahhhhh ok so two people in different areas doing crimes ok! I thought something totally different ok I understand now man this case is hurting my brains!

  4. if there were 2 people involved where was the second one?
how did they frame Richard ?
    why did they frame him?
is Richard the only one they did this to?
why did the other criminals reject him?
what other ways did they take advantage of him?
what truly happened in all of their relationships?
why did some mention solano then disappear? Or did they just hide but made it look like they disappeared to avoid being exposed or interrogated?
but motivated them want to take advantage of him?
Why did Julian show Richard to Julio, was he planning something?
All these questions and possibilities come to mind and more! There’s just too much to unfold with this case cuz the more you dig deep in you think you solved it but you really didn’t cuz there always something even if it’s small still missing which then leads us to a dead end with more questions!

  5. it seems like everyone is pointing the blame at Richard instead seeking the truth, non of the Gils theories makes sense how he said those words out of his mouth I’ll never understand. Lots of Richard’s so called friend group obviously had sketchy behaviours and to me even more.

  6. there’s a lot of comments I’m reading saying how “smart” Richard was, umm Wasn’t his IQ 91 like you guys said? Like yes he does ofc have some intelligence but no criminal master mind type of smart.

    1. I think because he was fairly articulate and had a decent vocabulary, people assume that means he was very clever. I guess people expected the Night Stalker to be a dumb thug and he never was.

      2. I like how, despite dropping out of school and going into crime, despite all his cognitive problems, he still tried to broaden his mind by reading and having topics to focus on. That’s a good quality. Some people in his position just remain stupid.

      3. Yes I’ve noticed that and I totally agree with you! That’s actually so good for the mind especially in his situation, also him writing people helps too! He even meditated as he stated not everyone can do that whether in his situation or not I’d freaking burst out laughing if I meditate 🤣 he really found ways to occupy his mind and i admire him for that! Not everyone can in his situation!
