Justice, Steve De Prima Style

At the preliminary hearing, Richard was beaten up by court bailiffs. It is unclear what happened, but as an elderly female witness was brought into the courtroom behind him, three bailiffs jumped on Richard and dragged him, still in his chair into the holding cell.

Richard was completely defenceless, as he was forced (unconstitutionally) to wear ankle shackles and as such, not a threat to anyone. He had no history of violence towards any court staff or prison guards. Nonetheless, one bailiff had him in a chokehold, while another – let’s name and shame him – Steve De Prima, evidently a violent thug, punched Richard several times in the face. Clearly enjoying beating up a defenceless man, they refused to allow Richard’s defence team into the holding cell. Eventually, Arturo Hernandez was permitted to peer in through a peephole and cried out, “You don’t have to hit him anymore. He’s not moving anymore.” He then turned to the courtroom and said “There’s four guys on top of him.”

“Three bailiffs repeatendly struck the lanky defendant with their fists as they jumped on him and quickly pulled him out a doorway and back to his holding cell. Ramirez, who as usual was manacled in leg chains, did not cry out during the brief struggle. After a half-hour recess, Ramirez’s preliminary hearing continued with the defendant grinning broadly as he was led back into the courtroom. A red scratch mark was evident on his neck where one of the bailiffs had applied a chokehold.”

L.A. Times, 1st May 1986.

Who is the criminal here? People clearly are not safe around Steve De Prima and company. One of the useless Hernandez defence attorneys asserted that De Prima had been “antagonistic and hostile” towards the defendant for the previous 8 weeks of the hearing. De Prima’s excuse was that the defendant had turned around as the witness (Esperanza Contreras Gonzales) entered, so he took it upon himself to assault Richard, grabbing him by the hair, and forcing him to face the front of the courtroom. The defence stated that Richard had only turned to confer with his lawyers.

Steve De Prima and his uncontrolled anger issues were removed for the duration of the case, but he was not punished. It is unknown whether the other aggressive bailiffs were allowed to remain.

Richard’s history of multiple serious head injuries and epilepsy was covered up and would not have been known to bailiffs, but he was the last person anybody should have been punching in the head – not that any defendant should be punched, whatever they are accused of. What kind of clown court was this, where three men (and apparently a fourth) were allowed to attack a defenceless and chained man before he was even on proper trial, let alone convicted? They had no right to mete out their own personal ‘justice’ in such a way. There was also some strange, unprofessional goings-on between both the defence and the prosecution here.

After the day’s session, Hernandez said that Ramirez had suffered scratches, but no extensive injuries. Ramirez laughed when he came back in the courtroom, Hernandez said, because he was embarrased. Hernandez accused Halpin of trying to provoke him into fighting. As Hernandez shouted at the bailiffs to stop hitting his client, the defense lawyer said, “Halpin was saying, ‘why don’t you wait until they come out and beat them up?”

L.A. Times, 1st May 1986.

It is important to note that this was also during the discussion regarding Jesse Perez and the false murder weapon. What a convenient distraction from the fact that Perez admitted he received the Jennings pistol before the Dois were supposedly murdered with it. The entire Ramirez case never fails to disgust.

  1. Thanks for bringing this incident to light. Everyone in that court room, with the exception of the few people that supported Richard and his incompetent attorneys, were biased and against Richard from day 1. It was never about seeing him as innocent until proven guilty. It was always guilty until proven otherwise in that kangaroo court. And Judge Tynan allowed the bailiffs to get away with beating on a defenseless individual. What should we have expected as he was the ringmaster of the kangaroo court? ” The Ramirez case never fails to disgust. ” I agree with that statement 100%.

    1. The more we look at it, the worse it becomes. Personally, I’ve never seen a more disturbing case than this one. It’s a never ending list of failures, unethical and unconstitutional decisions; add to that the lack of evidence and third party conflict of interest, and it’s an unmitigated disaster. That this was allowed to happen is baffling and yes, it never fails to disgust.

  2. […] Jesse Perez said he obtained the gun, then gave it to his girlfriend, Esperanza Contreras Gonzales in Tijuana. How romantic, to hand your special person a gun that is potentially a high-profile murder weapon. Jesse was granted immunity which is very odd, given that he had handled a ‘murder weapon’, allegedly knew details about a murder that Detective Salerno said was not known to the public and is a convicted burglar and killer. Surely this should have made him a suspect? Esperanza said the Jennings did not contain ammunition, but five bullets were found in the magazine when it arrived at customs… or were they in the revolver cylinder – because that gun on the documentary was not a Jennings! Esperanza was also given immunity at the 1986 Preliminary Hearing. […]

Richard Ramirez was already Been treated to b Guilty without reasonable doubt, the mistreatment of how the bailiff attack Ed him and pulling his hair and being assaulted what kinda court system is that with the judge and all Micheal T allowed this to happen how crooked is this. Richard did not stand a chance with all this Bias BS Just like he said this trial’s a joke. They sent an innocent man to Prison and death row. He didn’t ever got a fair Trial the system violated his by all means rights. Makes me mad just reading all the articles the writing bring in to our way of seeing how it was BS.

      1. We’re only highlighting what was always in the public domain, it’s just no one bothered to look, as they simply accepted the story as told by the media. No one seemed to look for the original crime reports, statements and trial documents. Or question any of it. Times change, and you’re right to be angry. We should not be spoon-fed false stories by anyone.

  3. If this is the type of (in my opinion) ‘abuse’ that we hear about happening to him. I don’t even want to imagine what went on behind close doors. I know jails and prisons are notoriously violent places. But this is just a whole new level of fu*ked up. I bet they felt really heroic going four against one. People take great pleasure in the suffering of others especially if they feel that the person has done something wrong. They already branded him the NS before he was even convicted so “what’s wrong with me giving him a couple punches to the head?” No matter what a person is accused of they deserve to be treated like a human being, not only did they violate his constitutional rights they also violated his existence as a human being by dehumanizing him like this and treating him like a animal. It makes me sick! Tynan was basically running a zoo instead of a court!

    1. Exactly, it’s disgusting. I know he kept turning round but there was clearly something wrong with him, he was clearly incompetent to stand trial but these judges just let it happen right in front of them.

    2. This was also very convenient because they were discussing what I think is a fake murder weapon in this part of the hearing. What a distraction !

  4. Even if they didn’t know about his previous injuries they had to have known about the serious head injury he incurred as a result of the ‘vigilante heroes’ capturing and beating him in August 1985. Brain injuries require a lot of medical care and treatment something that he probably wasn’t receiving in prison and take months perhaps years to properly heal. So even in 1986 he could possibly have been still trying to heal from the injury. Anyone with at least two braincells would know not to grab him like that. I know this sounds kind of like idiotic logic. But it doesn’t make sense to me why they didn’t have any form of professionalism and at the very least human decency. If he was just turning around I just wouldn’t roughly grab his head and turn it around. I’d get pissed off if someone did that to me too. The proper thing to have done would’ve been to ask him to turn around, as law enforcement your first instinct should not be to turn to violence. Also as you guys mentioned he didn’t have any prior incidents of being violent or aggressive towards law enforcement and court staff. From what I know he wasn’t even violent towards law enforcement during his arrest. I know it sounds like I may be blowing this whole thing out of proportion, but this case just pisses me off to my core.

  5. I agree this case and everything surrounding me makes me lose complete faith in humanity! If ‘certain’ people had done their jobs right and used their brains then the result would have been just and fair. But I guess fame, money, and other materialistic desires surpass the need for basic human decency. He was someone’s child, brother, friend, and uncle. He meant so much to so many people (except those who exploit him and this situation) and his freedom and life was stripped from him without proper due process or a fair trial. His family didn’t have the power, education, money, or other resources to assist him through this situation and they knew that and took advantage of it. If his family did have these things then this case would have never even gone to trial. The injustices that have been committed not only impacted Richard, but also his family, friends, the victims and their families, and the greater Los Angeles county among other places. The justice system and law enforcement itself needs serious reforms and people should be held accountable for doing sh*t like this to people. If it can happen to him it can happen to anybody. People don’t understand the gravity of this situation until it happens to them or someone they love.

    1. A superb summary, succinctly encapsulating the two-tiered justice system where you play with a loaded dice and poor people have no chance of winning.
It’s mind bending to think that anyone thinks it’s OK to go to trial without the accused being properly defended.

  6. it’s like nobody cares about health! Only money! And money can change a person! It’s seem sometimes that they wanted to make Richard angry to show people oh look see he’s angry to show this “monster” when really they having the fact he was railroaded and had an unfair trial etc… and Richard had every right to be angry who wouldn’t be in his situation! The lies, the false information the manipulation or never ends and it never will! The poor guy is dead leave him alone and let him find his peace already!

    1. Yea I agree that there was a chance that they did it to get some sort of violent reaction out of him and further prove that he was the NS. I also think that it was possibly to create a distraction from the testimony about the gun. I noticed in his interview with Watkiss that it seemed like Watkiss was purposefully being hostile and kind of goading him to get some sort of reaction out of him to convey the idea that he’s ‘violent satanist’. But in reality Watkiss himself came out looking like a unprofessional prick who incapable of conducting a proper interview. It was supposed to be an interview not a interrogation! I know he acknowledged that he screwed up by talking to Bill Carns prior to the interview and carried over his anger and frustration from hearing what happened to Carns and his girlfriend. But Richard was not even convicted of the crime at that point (or any point for that matter), just because someone is accused of something does not mean that they are guilty of it. That’s what we have courts for! I’ve seen so many psychologists and body language experts do an analysis of the interview and they all describe him as a ticking time bomb and they are entitled to their opinion and analysis. But I feel like he seemed more nervous and anxious. He was shifting a lot throughout the interview, his breathing was labored, and he seemed so uncomfortable. As someone with extreme anxiety I would be reacting the same way if I was in a tiny room with a camera shoved in my face and a pissed off dude tearing me apart verbally. The bloody tension alone would have made me pass out! That interview was a great chance to get some real insight into who Richard was and it was wasted. It seems to me that they pulled all types of shenanigans to make Richard look like a ‘villain’.

      1. I totally agree with you! Watkiss was really pushing his buttons and you can tell Richard was uncomfortable! Watkiss even stayed that Richard is on the same level or rank as Bundy and dalhmer what?! Then said so you didn’t kill 13 people then Richard was like that is correct. Then he said soemthing like oh so you’re just not gonna confess! I believe that truly Richard was innocent and if he did do anything then I don’t see him having a point of hiding it he would have easily confessed but I don’t believe at all he did anything!

If they were in the same situation as him let’s see if they love the cops and law then! They just can’t comprehend that the USA justice system is so fucked up! They all ignoring the big red flag! Richard as you said was someone’s loved one! You stole his freedom you stole his chance to get help you stole his chance to get a new life and fix his problems! Nobody gets it they trust the system and law enforcements way too blindly and way to much to go against it!

  9. What makes me even more sad was it seems like he was trying to get his life back on track at the time that he was arrested. He was trying to get his teeth fixed, taking supplements, and according to some of his ‘friends’ he was taking weight gaining concoctions to counteract his weight loss. I’m not 100% sure but it seemed like he quit doing cocaine because I didn’t see needle marks on his arms in the arrest photos, but I could be wrong. It doesn’t seem like much but to go from taking hard drugs basically every single day and eating out of trash cans (according to Robert) to a normal healthy life is a huge process and he was at least trying to make some progress. The world never gave him a chance to change and improve.

    1. I feel the same! I felt as tho he saw his life going down and need to change and he was homeless poor no family couldn’t get a job, so how else is he gonna earn money? The only way he knew STEALING! He probably stole items selling them to fences and getting the money to fix his teeth if he didn’t care why would he want to fix his teeth?! Idk myself too much about drugs like cocain so idk how it would look like if ppl stoped it but judging by the way Richard was in court it didn’t seem like he was someone what was withdrawn from it and yes I didn’t see any needle marks or fresh needle marks myself. Maybe he truly did stop cocaine cuz as Richard was someone people said if he wanted to do something he’d do it so maybe he wanted to stop and he did!

      1. In that shirtless photo of him (taken after he was arrested to document his injuries, I imagine) you can see the track marks on his arm, and I think he looks as if he’s coming down or off something in the earliest court appearances, He’s very twitchy.

      3. He had horrible, particularly male influences, around him who essentially encouraged him to take drugs instead of trying to face their problems in a healthy way. I know that basically every member of Richard’s family had been through a significant amount of trauma and abuse and taking drugs was probably the best way to escape and Richard had a personal responsibility not to engage in that stuff, but they knew how destructive that path was and still let him go down it. I remember in Ignacio’s declaration he said “After Richard moved to Los Angeles, Julian Jr. returned to visit the family in EI Paso. He asked me why I never taught Richie how to really get high, and he then said that he had had to teach him himself. He also told me that Richard had developed a $500 a day cocaine habit and that Richard was shooting up coke on a regular basis.” Like you knew he was getting into hard drugs and barely did anything about it.

      4. I found that so gross! Julian teaching his messed up kid brother how to get “properly high”. In her family report Cornell is pretty disparaging in her assessment of how three of the Ramirez brothers were totally unable to support themselves as adults, she was referring to Julian, Robert and Richard. Julian’s kids were taken into care for “an extended time” due to his (and his wife’s) drug and alcohol abuse. Both Julian and Robert were in and out of jail for years. As for Richard.. well, we all know how that ended. What a mess.

Watkiss was just completely disrespectful and barely let him talk and the audacity he had to tell Richard that “he hopes he gets exactly what he deserves”. Zero professionalism whatsoever. It was a poor job, unprofessional and a waste of time. I emailed Watkiss a couple of years ago and sent him all the documents, with a “You know, and I know that the trial wasn’t a fair one”.

Yes, Kaycee is our “third” and very much part of the team, even if she doesn’t talk as much as Venning and me. lol It’s never been easy to talk about this case, we see how it goes down, and all the sharing of misinformation, but there’s nothing to be done about that. Fangirls, hybristos, they are some of the worst out there. Then there’s the virtue signallers; they know little but will hate you anyway. Few stick their heads above the parapet and you can see why.
It says quite clearly on the home page what this blog is about, we mention it over and over; it’s about the trial and lack of defence. We do not say he’s innocent, we are clear about that. BUT, even if you try and share evidence or anything that points to the corruption involved here, you will bring them shrieking to your door. It’s honestly not worth it. You can’t change mindsets that are fuelled by a need to “belong” to a crowd where no one is allowed a different opinion. Especially if they’re using Netflix as their guide; it is futile.

This is our place to be able to share the legal documents and to talk openly about the trial, I will not allow bullying or abuse here. Different opinions? Yes, absolutely, as long as they can give rational argument without resorting to insults. It’s not an echo chamber.
Knowledge should be shared, so I’m glad you’re finding the confidence to talk openly. I told you that you are safe here.

We are not like that. If you’ve ever wondered why there was Type A blood stains at a crime scene, and yet the accused and the victim did not have that blood type, you should be able to question it. Wouldn’t you wonder who bled there?

This made me sick to my stomach. Failure after failure, unethical and unconstitutional decisions being made, conflict of interests. I can’t help but wonder, if RR hid his satanic beliefs, would it have gotten this bad? Today in 2025, I don’t think there would be such an extreme case of Satanic Panic as back in 1993. I truly believe RR’s belief in Santanism made it way worse for him.

People weren’t in google, chatGPT and reading news that aren’t biased. Everyone, be careful of the media – we have all learnt from COVID that so much is NOT true. – but back to the RR case- this is just shocking. RIP RR>

I read somewhere (online, so it’s most likely bullshit) that Richard said DePrima was sexually interested in one of his groupies who rejected him so he took it out on Richard. Either way, it just shows how unprofessional people act around him. From police to prison deputies, to court personnel and even the district attorney. He was never given a chance, just hated on sight.
